Northern Territory Literary Awards 2019

The annual Northern Territory Literary Awards celebrate the unpublished work of Territory writers in a range of categories.   

All writers across the NT, from our Red Centre to the Top End, whether experienced wordsmiths or just starting out, are encouraged to submit their work. Winners receive fantastic cash prizes, as well as free memberships and masterclasses with the Northern Territory Writers’ Centre.

Submissions open: Monday 18 March 2019
Submissions close: Monday 29 April 2019

The winner will receive a $1000 prize, consideration for a rehearsed reading with Brown’s Mart Theatre and a NT Writers’ Centre membership. 

There is no word limit. Scripts must have a performance time of more than 30 minutes. Script treatments are ineligible. 

Entries open on Monday 18 March 2019 and close on midnight on Monday 29 April 2019.

A factually accurate work, written with attention to literary style and technique.  Can take the form of a biography, autobiography, memoir, diary entry, travel writing, food writing, literary journalism, or criticism.

Word limit: 3000 words.

The winner of the Charles Darwin University Creative Non-Fiction Award will receive $500 and a NT Writers’ Centre membership and masterclass. 


Entries open on Monday 18 March 2019 and close on midnight on Monday 29 April 2019.

A referenced academic essay on a topic relating to the Northern Territory. 

Word limit: 3000 words

The winner will receive a $1000 prize and a NT Writers’ Centre membership and masterclass.

A piece of creative writing, either poetry or short story, by a person aged 12 to 18 years as of 1 January 2019.

Entries limited up to three poetry entries per person with a 300-line limit for poetry or a short story up to 3000 words. 

The winner of the Kath Manzie Youth Award will receive a $600 prize and a NT Writers’ Centre membership and masterclass.

Entries open on Monday 18 March 2019 and close on midnight on Monday 29 April 2019.

A single poem up to 300 lines. 

Entries limited to three separate poetry entries per person. 

The winner of the NT Writers' Centre Poetry Award will receive a $1000 prize and a NT Writers’ Centre membership and masterclass.


Entries open on Monday 18 March 2019 and close on midnight on Monday 29 April 2019.

A blog post, fan fiction, short story, fictional diary entry or fictional letter.

Word limit: 500 words. Entries limited to three entries per person. 

The winner of the Flash Fiction Award will receive a $500 prize and a NT Writers’ Centre membership and masterclass.

Entries open on Monday 18 March 2019 and close on midnight on Monday 29 April 2019.

An original work of short fiction. 

Word limit: up to 3000 words
